Hands On With The Wii Fit U Meter

Hi guys and gals,

So to all you fitness freaks trying to break the cliché of the fat, out-of-shape gamer, let me introduce you to the Wii Fit U Meter. The Fit Meter is an accessory for the predecessor to Nintendo's Wii Fit Plus, Wii Fit U.

The accessory isn't a required purchase but it unlocks the ability to further track your activity outside of the game.
I will be trying it out over the next few days and if you have any questions just let me know

Just received my Black Wii Fit U Meter

The first thing I noticed was just how small this thing is. It measures roughly 2" and feels very light. On the face of the device is 3 buttons and on the rear, a pretty study belt clip. There is nothing worse then when your headphones are yanked from your ears as your MP3 player smashes against the concrete due to a weak clip and only time will tell if this is up to the job

Anyone actually interested in purchasing Wii Fit U, its a bit of a mess around but this is how it works. Please note that you WILL need a Wii balance board for the game

  • First you need to download the Wii Fit U demo from the Wii U eShop. You will notice that only a 31 day trial is available but don't worry, that's what you are looking for
  • Once the download in completed and installed you can start using the complete game for the trial period. To unlock the whole game however you need to purchase a Wii Fit U Meter (RRP £19.99) and sync it to the console

So I have had a few days with the Fit Meter now and I am very impressed with it so far. Lets dive straight into the review...

SETTING UP

Before you can start using the Fit Meter it needs to be registered to the console. Boot up Wii Fit U, select the Fit Meter option and sync it with the gamepad. To do this you need to aim the IR sensor on the Fit Meter to the one on the gamepad when prompted.

This was actually a bit fiddly as I kept getting "failed to find device" error messages. It turned out my room was too dark so I moved closer to the window and success!

Once the sync is complete (it takes seconds) you are greeted with your virtual Mii on the screen of the Fit Meter. The screen also displays multiple pages for you to cycle through. This includes -

  • Pedometer page which also shows the calories you have burned
  • 2 graph pages, one for activity and one for altitude
  • Bar chart of the calories burned for each day of the week
  • Settings screen

You can scroll through the pages using the center button on the Fit Meter and the left and right buttons allow you to cycle through the graphs in hour intervals to see your activity at a specific time

USING THE FIT METER

Once the setup is completed you will notice that the Fit Meter switches off pretty quickly. You only need to turn it on to sync your data to the gamepad or if you want to check your activity throughout the day. The Fit Meter will work whilst in sleep mode so you don't need to keep switching it on

Feeling eager for a walk I grabbed my hat and gloves and took to the streets. There really is no noticeable weight to the Fit Meter and due to its size it is not at all intrusive. After spending an hour walking I arrived back at the house to analyze the data. I was really surprised at how accurate the reading was. I actually stopped at one point to answer a call and another time I ran across a pedestrian crossing and both occasions were picked up in the activity graph.
It also shows the amount of steps I had taken and the amount of calories I had burned.

I also tried the Fit Meter during a jog around my local park. Again there was no weight concerns and you wouldn't even know you were wearing it. I set off around 8:30am (with little sleep due to it being Bonfire Night the day before) and got home around 9:45am. Checking the graphs again, I was impressed with the accuracy of the Fit Meter. During my run I could see the pace I started with declined as time went on and I could also see spikes in the bar showing I was inconsistent with my speed at times. The elevation was also tracked and everything seemed to be registering without problem.

TRANSFERING DATA

Once you have completed your day you can transfer the data in the Fit Meter to the Wii U gamepad to see the information in more detail using the Wii Fit U game. This will take the calories you burned using the Fit Meter and add it to the amount you burned playing Wii Fit U.
When viewing the graphs through the game you will notice that they are now color coded. This is to show the times when you were lightly active, highly active and the times in which you weren't moving at all! It really is great to be able to see, minute by minute you activity throughout the whole day

OVERALL IMPRESSION

I am pleasantly surprised at the accuracy of the data recorded. I used my phone along with the Fit Meter and found that both results were very similar although the phone readings stated I burned off more calories then that stated by the Fit Meter.
I like the idea that I can use it throughout the whole day. I literally clip it on in the morning and as I change cloths in the night, I unclip it and sync it to the gamepad

It is so compact you will honestly forget you are wearing it most of the time and design wise it is very attractive.

So having enjoyed my time with the Fit Meter I can highly recommend it. At £19.99 for both game and accessory I think it is definitely worth it
